This week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the Littlefork Garden Club, a small but mighty group of six dedicated members who quietly do some of the most visible work in our community.

When I asked how long the Garden Club has been around, the group laughed and admitted they weren’t exactly sure, but they believe it began sometime in the 1930s. Listening to them reminisce about the members who came before them and the memories they’ve carried through the decades was genuinely moving. You could feel the history in the room.
What the Garden Club Does for Littlefork
- Right now, the club cares for eight planters around town, including:
- City Hall
- Polkinghorne’s Hardware Hank
- The empty lot across from J&D Foods
- Main Street Pub
- Community Building
- Thrift Shop
- Tru‑Star FCU
- Hometown Motel
These planters aren’t just for decoration. I learned something fascinating during the meeting: the plants chosen for our town are intentionally selected for pollinators, including butterflies and caterpillars.
Mary shared that she even plants flowers at home specifically for Monarch butterflies, and the group explained that many of the plants around town serve the same purpose. They’re not just beautiful; they’re part of a living ecosystem.

They Need New Members — And You Don’t Need Experience
When I asked if they were looking for new members, the answer came fast and unanimous: YES.
With only six members, the workload can be challenging. They shared how much it would mean to have more hands and more hearts involved. You don’t need gardening experience; they’ll teach you everything you need to know.
In past years, the club hosted a Garden Gala, but unfortunately, they won’t be able to hold one this year due to a lack of volunteers. More members could help bring events like that back to life.
Why They Love Being Part of the Club
- Their answers were simple and wholesome:
- They love getting together and socializing.
- Betty shared that joining the club was a big learning experience for her.
- Judy said one of her favorite parts is visiting other gardens and discovering new ideas to bring home.
It’s clear this group isn’t just about flowers; it’s about friendship, community, and keeping Littlefork beautiful.
How You Can Help — Even If You’re Not a Member
These are the people who put in the effort to keep our town looking welcoming and cared for. If you ever notice:
- Litter in the planters → please pick it up
- Dry soil → feel free to give them a little water
- Or contact the city if something needs attention
